The Teatro Real is the flagship — grand opera productions at the highest level, in a beautiful 19th-century building. The Teatro de la Zarzuela specialises in the Spanish light opera genre unique to Madrid. The Gran Vía is the main commercial theatre street, with long-run musicals and Spanish-language shows. The Centro Dramático Nacional at the María Guerrero produces serious contemporary theatre.
When to visit
Madrid theatre runs year-round, with the main season October to June. Summer sees some outdoor and festival programming. October and November are ideal — the autumn season is at full strength and the city is at its most lively.

Zarzuela is a Spanish art form combining opera, spoken dialogue, and dance. Lighter than grand opera, very entertaining even without Spanish. The Teatro de la Zarzuela has English surtitles for many productions.

Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas (MAD). Around 25 minutes to the city centre by metro.
Is Madrid good for a long weekend?
Ideal. The Prado, the Reina Sofía, Retiro Park, and excellent food all sit alongside the theatre scene in a compact, walkable city.
