La Scala and beyond
La Scala's season runs December to July, with the traditional opening on 7 December (Sant'Ambrogio). The main house stages opera, ballet, and symphony. The Piccolo Teatro di Milano is Italy's leading repertory theatre — less well-known internationally but consistently excellent. The Teatro dal Verme and the Conservatorio di Milano complete the serious concert scene.
When to visit
December is peak — the season opening at La Scala is a major event and tickets are extremely hard to get. January to July gives the best programme breadth. Book La Scala tickets as far in advance as possible — many performances sell out months ahead. Breaks flags lead times in your plan.
Common questions
How far ahead do I need to book La Scala?
Popular productions sell out 3–6 months in advance. Some last-minute tickets are released, but for specific shows on specific nights, book as early as possible.
Which airport do I fly into?
Linate (LIN) is 10 minutes from the city centre. Malpensa (MXP) is larger with more routes but 45 minutes out.
What else is worth doing in Milan?
The Duomo and its rooftop, the Brera art gallery, and the Last Supper (book weeks ahead) sit naturally alongside an evening at La Scala.
