Why Kalymnos

Kalymnos has more sport climbing routes per square kilometre than almost anywhere on earth. The rock is a unique pocketed limestone with tufa formations, stalactites, and wave-cut caves. Routes start at 4b and reach 9a+. The island has built its entire economy around climbing — the accommodation, the cafés, the ferry timetables — all designed around the climbing community.

When to go

September to November is the peak season — warm, dry, and full of climbers from across Europe. Spring (March to May) is quieter and equally good. Summer is very hot and most serious climbers avoid July and August. The island is served by ferries from Kos and direct summer charter flights from some UK airports.

Common questions

What grade do I need for Kalymnos?

There are excellent routes from 4b upwards. The volume of 6a–7b routes is extraordinary. It rewards any level from beginner to elite.

Is Kalymnos good for beginners?

Yes — the Grande Grotta and Arginonta sectors have many easier routes, and the island has experienced guides who run beginner programmes.

How do I get there?

Fly to Kos (KGS) and take the ferry — 45 minutes to Pothia harbour. Direct flights from UK airports run from April to October. Out of season you connect through Athens.
