Instructor-led climbing holidays serve three clear audiences. First, climbers transitioning from indoor to outdoor — guided trips dramatically shorten the learning curve on lead climbing, anchor building, multi-pitch movement. Second, intermediate sport climbers wanting to push grades — coaching on technique, projecting, mental skills moves you from comfortable 6a into solid 6c+ in a focused week. Third, climbers tackling new disciplines — moving from sport to trad, into multi-pitch, into via ferrata (see via ferrata in the Dolomites) or into Alpine routes. Without a guide, this transition takes years; with one, it's a week.
Best destinations for instructor-led climbing
Instructor-led climbing holidays favour destinations with deep IFMGA presence and the route inventory to support coached weeks. The Dolomites for multi-pitch and Alpine progression. The French Alps (Chamonix region) for serious mountain skills. Each region has IFMGA guides with English fluency, intimate route knowledge and the teaching frameworks to make a week genuinely productive.
How instructor-led weeks work
Instructor-led climbing holidays typically run as: pre-trip briefing on your current ability, learning objectives and target grades. Day 1 assessment + technique fundamentals. Days 2-4 progressive route days targeting your objectives. Day 5 challenge or summit/big route. Day 6 review + technique refinement. Day 7 free climbing applying what you've learned. Guide pricing is usually €280-450/day for up to 4 climbers (per guide, not per client) — so 4 of you sharing a guide is dramatically cheaper than 1-on-1. We'll match you to the guide, the venue and the cohort size that fits your goals.
Common questions
Do I need a partner for an instructor-led climbing holiday?
No — the instructor is your partner. Some trips include other climbers (1-on-3 or 1-on-4 with a guide) which works for shared learning.
What's the difference between a guide and an instructor?
Largely interchangeable for our purposes. IFMGA-certified mountain guides do both — guiding you up specific routes AND coaching technique.
Best destination for an absolute first-outdoor-climb trip?
Kalymnos for sport climbing introduction. Spain (El Chorro) for the same with cheaper logistics. The Dolomites for via ferrata or first multi-pitch.
Cost of an instructor-led week?
€2,000-4,000 per climber for a week including guide fees (shared), accommodation, transfers, gear hire. More for premium 1-on-1 weeks.
Can I bring a beginner partner?
Yes — most guided weeks accommodate mixed-ability pairs. Your guide will design the day so both climbers progress.
