Dublin's great theatres

The Abbey Theatre is Ireland's national theatre — founded by W.B. Yeats in 1904, it stages new Irish writing alongside classics on two stages. The Gate Theatre in Parnell Square is the Abbey's partner in prestige — intimate, beautifully restored, and famous for its Beckett productions. Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in the Docklands handles the big touring musicals and opera. The Gaiety on South King Street mixes pantomime, opera seasons, and touring productions.

FAQ

Common questions

Is Dublin good for a theatre weekend?

Ideal. The city is compact — most theatres are within walking distance of each other and of the best hotels. A Friday-to-Sunday trip fits two or three shows comfortably.

Do I need to book ahead?

For the Abbey and Gate, booking 2–4 weeks ahead covers most shows. The Theatre Festival sells out fast — book as soon as the programme is announced in August.

Which airport?

Dublin Airport (DUB), about 30 minutes from the city by taxi or bus. Excellent flight connections from all UK airports.
